Filing for an Uncontested Divorce? Work with an Attorney to Assist You Through This Process

Low cost divorce

Are you planning to get divorced? If you’re filling an uncontested divorce, then you will want to obtain the services of uncontested divorce lawyers. Since an uncontested divorce is usually less problematic than a contested divorce, it makes sense to work with an attorney experienced in these types of cases.

Women tend to file for divorce more often than men. They account for approximately 2/3 of the divorces being filed. While each person’s or couple’s reasons for wanting a divorce may be unique, there are recognized leading causes. The Journal of Family Issues, for example, published a study that addressed highlighted these issues:

  • Infidelity: 21.6%
  • Incompatibility: 19.2%
  • Drinking or drug abuse: 10.6%

According to the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, 50% of couples therapists have clients that are in therapy due to infidelity. This points to how some couples are willing to work through this betrayal, and in some cases, they may reconcile.

It’s interesting to note that the time a couple dates prior to becoming engaged can also make a difference in whether or not they may become divorced. When couples date at least 3 years, as opposed to less than a year, a study showed that they were 39% less likely to seek a divorce.

After your initial divorce petition is filed and your spouse has been served, there will be a zero to 6 month waiting period until the divorce is final. This waiting period will, of course, depend on a number of factors which your divorce attorney will explain to you.

When a couple has children together, there will usually be a few details to work out regarding custody, visitation, and child support. If there’s an issue with child custody, for example, 29% of these types of cases are usually resolved without a third party being involved. For the 5% of cases that did call for third party involvement, issues were resolved after a custody evaluation.

Uncontested divorce lawyers will be able to assist you with filing your divorce papers and handling other issues that may arise, such as child custody. Once you begin this process, your attorney will be there to advise you every step of the way.
